Strengthening Excellence: The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Evaluation Visit

Last week we welcomed the evaluation visit for the Diploma Programme (DP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). This process takes place every five years and forms part of the IB’s commitment to ensuring that authorised schools continue to provide the highest standards of international education.

Rather than being simply an evaluation, this visit represents an opportunity to reflect, grow and continue improving. It allows schools to review their educational practices, highlight their strengths and identify new opportunities to further develop teaching and learning for the benefit of our students.

What is the IB Diploma Programme?

The Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous and internationally recognised curriculum designed for students aged 16 to 19. Its aim is not only to provide strong academic preparation, but also to develop critical thinking, research skills, international-mindedness and a sense of global responsibility.

Students in the programme study a balanced combination of subjects and also complete three core components of the DP:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we construct what we claim to know.
  • The Extended Essay (EE), an independent research project that develops academic research and writing skills.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), which promotes personal growth through experiences beyond the classroom.

Together, these elements prepare students to successfully face university and future challenges, developing young people who are curious, engaged and globally minded.

The Importance of the Five-Year Evaluation

All schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate take part in a programme evaluation every five years. This process ensures that schools continue to meet the standards and practices of the IB.

During the visit, the evaluators work alongside the school to review different aspects of the programme, including:

  • Teaching and learning approaches
  • Curriculum implementation
  • Student experience and wellbeing
  • Programme leadership and management
  • The school’s commitment to the IB philosophy and mission

The process also includes meetings with school leaders, teachers, students and families, providing a comprehensive view of how the programme is experienced within the school community.

A Whole Community Effort

One of the most special aspects of the visit was seeing how students, families and teachers came together to share our work, our daily life at school and the values that define our educational community.

Our students demonstrated maturity, commitment and enthusiasm for learning, while our teachers showcased their passion, dedication and commitment to educational excellence. Families also contributed their perspectives and experiences as an essential part of our educational project.

Looking to the Future

Taking part in the IB evaluation process reminds us that education is a journey of continuous development. It encourages us to keep reflecting, learning and improving in order to provide the best possible educational experience for our students.

We are proud to be part of the global community of the International Baccalaureate and to continue working with the aim of preparing our students for the challenges of an increasingly global and interconnected world.
